Wisdom of the Idiots; part 11 – Human Cognition, Perceptual Irrelevance & Social Clubs
As a result of my Karmic reincarnation on the Wheel of Life, as a psychologist this time round, I find myself helplessly driven to conduct secret psychosocial experiments on unwitting subjects. Now, that's not as much fun as you might think. Oh no. There's a lot of competition out there in this game and I found myself up against some pretty serious players who were well established in the business and not very keen on a Johnny-come-lately like me. Damned parvenu, one called me just before he called the police.
As part of my cultivation of Perceptual Irrelevance I've noticed that there aren't any of the old factory employee social clubs any more with their wonderful brass bands like Brighouse & Rastrick and weekend charabancs to Wigan Pier. Someone took them down and packed them all away. Maybe they had to. Maybe it was part of an all-inclusive package deal and they had to go away abroad with all the factories.
But, you know, The Beijing & Renqiu Brass Band lacks the cachet, that je ne sais quoi of Brighouse & Rastrick - but it doesn't really matter I suppose. I don't really see them having any working men's social clubs and brass bands anyway.
It troubles me somehow that culture disappears with industry.
Musashi.
