“Imam sahib, What is a good Muslim?” I asked an Imam I knew.
“A good Muslim is one who obeys all the commands of God and His prophet, peace be upon him.” said the Imam.
“And what is a bad Muslim, Imam sahib?” I asked him.
“A bad Muslim is one who does not obey God and His prophet, peace be upon him .”
“Imam sahib, who best interprets the meaning of the Koran?”
“The prophet, peace be upon him, is the only interpreter. He is Insan-i-Kamil – the Perfect Man. He has interpreted the Koran for us in the Hadeeth. This is where we must look for guidance.”
“But Imam sahib” I continued, “God and His prophet say that Muslims are commanded to convert, kill or enslave non Muslims and to conduct Jihad against them wherever they are found. If they have the power, or the numbers, they should overthrow the state and bring Islam and sharia.”
“A good Muslim submits to the will of Allah and obeys his commands.” he said.
“But a bad Muslim does not do this, does he?” I continued.
“No. A bad Muslim does not obey the will and the commands of God, as revealed by the prophet, peace be upon him.” he said.
“What should good Muslims do with these people – these bad Muslims?” I went on.
“God commands that all those who depart from the ways of Islam are to be killed.” he said. “God commands death for apostates.”
“Even those who repent and return to their faith? To be Muslim again?” I pursued him.
“God commands it be so.” he answered.
“And their wives and their children who depend upon them, Imam sahib? What of them, then?”
“They are to be enslaved and taught the true way of Islam – as God commands.”
“Imam sahib, there are 74 Jihad-driven conflicts across the world. Many towns and cities have been destroyed and tens of thousands of people have been killed. Millions are made homeless and fled to be refugees. These jihadis are good Muslims fighting in the way of God, are they?”
“If they are obeying Allah, sharia, the way of Islam, then yes, they are to be considered good Muslims.”
“And those Muslims who do not take up arms and join in these conflicts, are they bad Muslims?”
“A bad Muslim is one who does not obey God and His prophet, pbuh.” he repeated.
“And God says that Muslims must conduct Jihad against all unbelievers wherever they are found – they are to be converted, killed or enslaved?” I went on.
“It is a divine commandment.” he reminded me.
“Thank you for enlightening me, Imam sahib.” I concluded.
“So, my friend,” he said “do you wish to embrace Islam and be a Muslim?”
“Will you kill me if I don't? You are, after all, a good Muslim are you not?”
